Is CBD oil or capsules good for you?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant also found in its psychoactive cousin marijuana. It was initially discovered in 1940 and has had a significant rise in popularity over the past 5 years. There has been a lot of recent research about CBD and its effects on the body. And yet there is still a lot of controversy about its safety and efficacy depending on different sources.

CBD has a direct effect on the endocannaboid system (ECS) of our bodies. Most every cell and tissue in our body has receptors for cannabinoids and our body produces its own cannabinoids. Our endocannaboid system is found throughout every part of our body and yet its function is primarily that of bringing balance (homeostasis) and stability of the body’s internal environment. Taking pure CBD oil or capsules goes to the ECS receptor sites and up-regulates (stimulates) these sites which enhances and helps the system function. Our ECS system is primarily used is response to stress, illness and injury. The following effects have been found when stimulating the ECS receptors with cannabinoids (CBD):

  1. Decreased anxiety partially by increasing the neurotransmitter Serotonin

  2. Antioxidant to the brain and nervous system to protect and heal damage

  3. Enhances sleep and reduces daytime sleepiness

  4. Decreases pain and inflammation of tissues and joints.

Just like other plant based supplementation one must be aware of the purity of the product. There are a lot of people making CBD oil from a number of extraction methods. The concern about purity of the product also goes to pesticides and other contaminants that may be present as well as the efficacy and dosage of individual CBD products. When researching which CBD product to buy look at a full spectrum product with a full range of phytochemicals that are normally found in the hemp plant such as terpenes, flavonoids which work synergistically with the CBD.

I have been very impressed with CBD’s effects on my patients. As I searched the literature for possible negative effects, I found a few things we should be aware of.

  1. Buy a pure product from a clean source and reputable company (it’s not cheap!)

  2. CBD should not be taking with certain medications! If you were warned about not drinking grapefruit or citrus juice with your med.’s the CBD works the same way by allowing more of the drug into the blood stream accentuating the effect.

  3. And start with a low dose first so as not to get Gastrointestinal problems
